The Showrunner Shares He Knows How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
