Slot Offers No Excuses and Pledges to Find Route From Malaise
Arne Slot declared he had to “look at myself” after Liverpool suffered a 6th loss in seven English top-flight matches at home against Nottingham Forest and affirmed he would discover a way out of the title holders' poor run.
Forest, in the relegation zone before kick off, delivered the biggest victory at Liverpool's stadium in their club records as the Merseyside club fell to an 8th loss in 11 fixtures in all competitions. The most expensive domestic acquisition, the Swedish striker, was once more anonymous and the home side argued the defender's opener should have been ruled out for similar reasons to Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed effort versus Manchester City prior to the national team pause. But Slot admitted the buck rested with him and made no excuses.
“No one wants to listen to me now talking about officiating calls if you lose 3-0 in your own stadium to Forest,” stated the Reds' boss. “I should look at my own role first and my team, but it demonstrates you how a score can alter the flow of a game. Earlier I was just hoping for us to score a strike. Later we barely created anything.
“Of course there is a path forward, particularly with the quality footballers we have. No matter if you triumph or lose when you reflect you are always thinking: ‘Where can we do better, in what aspects can we make changes?’ but that is different from questioning your abilities.
“I want to stress I am responsible for the current losses. You are responsible when you are victorious but also responsible when you are defeated. I can never come up with sufficient excuses for us to have the outcomes we have. That is not acceptable and I am to blame for that.”
The team's performance fell apart as Slot introduced several offensive changes when chasing the match. “It was the identical away at Nottingham Forest last season,” he said. “I substituted the French defender off and brought on the Portuguese forward and he scored straight away to equalize at 1-1. Then it was courageous, now it’s likely unwise.”
The Anfield side last lost back-to-back at Anfield Premier League fixtures by Nottingham Forest in the sixties. The most recent occasion they lost back-to-back league matches by a 3-0 scoreline was in 1965.
Slot said: “It was extremely poor. Playing at home, losing 3-0 no matter which team you encounter is a very, very bad outcome. Surprising if you look at the first half-hour of the match. I haven’t seen us creating so much in the opening 30 minutes maybe the whole campaign, and the first time they entered in our box they found the back of the net.
“It wasn’t at City, but in all other fixture we have been the dominant side and were capable to create opportunities. Lately it is nearly constantly that we miss our chances and the ones we concede go in.”
