Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup Despite Formal Protests from Iran and Egypt

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities throughout the city amid the upcoming World Cup will continue unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations Alongside City Celebrations

Local organizers have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body will permit Pride flags inside the match venue.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to prepare our city to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Background of Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be associated with celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Symbols

The international federation holds full authority over match venues on matchdays. Although it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to highlight the city's longstanding tradition of advocating for inclusion and equality.
  • A design contest is underway to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
  • Planners have pledged to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest during the tournament.

The region hosts a significant largest communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations from every competing country. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” organizers added.
