Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity

Getting rid of unneeded offerings might be seen as a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Charitable Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 gifts given to her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. This unusual assortment is said to contain objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. An exact timeline is yet to be set, although the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with all funds raised benefiting a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Collection

These gifts are said to be kept in a repository on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni is also intending to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.

The full gift list remains disclosed, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The question raised if a legal value limit was being honored. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

A Global Array of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Political Context

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a unconventional way to handle the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a time in office.
