Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared security footage Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
