Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and stated they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Recording That Sparked the Debate

The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in armed forces or defense roles.

"Similar to us, you all swore an vow to protect and defend this constitution," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you should reject improper directives. No one has to execute commands that contravene the law or our founding principles."

The Former President's Incensed Response

The recorded statement appeared to provoke a heated reply from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Representatives React

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a joint declaration condemning the comments.

"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they declared. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our United States with great loyalty and honor. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to make certain the protection of these officials and their families."

"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged social media posts and retract his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement added.

Lawmakers' Defiant Response

The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a response.

"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who care for this country and took an oath to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that sacred obligation."

"What's most telling is that the former president deems it punishable by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They added: "All citizens must come together and censure the president's calls for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."

Additional Political Responses

The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and without qualification."

The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the legislature advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that's historic in American history."

The Conservative representative also according to sources informed the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."

Administration Reaction

During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."

"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the spokesperson said. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to organize a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the president's lawful orders."

She added: "The purity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can cause people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are basically supporting."
